I’m with Dominik. Reading now for the second time. Such important and essential perspective. I found myself in much of what you wrote and I didn’t like it. Thank you for the awareness - I can now choose to alter some of my approach to things and my way of being. 🙏
I’m glad it resonated James. It was one of those that came out of me. Not in one go, but the ideas were almost fully formed and just wanted to come out. Thanks for the support, I appreciate it
Sure thing. I’m glad you “got it out!” It will be of service to your readers. The part about where to eat out really made me think. I have twin 14 year olds and my wife and I both work. We eat out probably 3 nights a week. We fix dinner the other nights and always eat as a family, but I feel guilty about how easy and often we just ask ourselves “where?” 😳
Oh damn. I’d never wanna discourage you from enjoying eating out. Take everything I’ve written with a pinch of salt (pun intended). I was writing about myself as much as anyone
Harrison. I’m thankful. What I love about good writing (yours) is that it’s thought provoking. For me there was an intentionality component of your perspective. If everything is easy or automatic, how intentional are our decisions. Not to mention that sans effort, are they really serving us.
…i think shakespeare chose the wrong tool for the job…though i think the sword was the leatherman multitool of his day…great read but i kept thinking about that…a sword is a miserable way to open an oyster…more difficult probably than a rock…oysters though such interesting beasts…sweet salty briny and sometimes better with bbq…one of the only animals that can barely move itself…lots of evocation at play here…
I LOVE this piece Harrison. Thank you for letting the rant fly. I sense it came to you with its own voice and you seem to have let it through. The whole thing is so good. So much to highlight and share. But this . . .
“The world is your oyster” sure as hell feels like an adage for the ages, the rallying cry of the indulgence generation. But I'm as scared of wealth as I am of poverty—of time wealth, economic wealth, freedom wealth, and choice wealth. Because, it ultimately dislocates me from one of life's most fundamental principles, the very principle that Shakespeare and those who canonised his phrase tried to get us to bear in mind: that the obstacle is the way, that strength builds from resistance; that creativity is catalysed by constraints; and that yours is the earth and everything that's in it, sure, but only if you fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run."
