Thanks for this Harrison. ive just watched the sedaris masterclass but i think what youve done here is great. i write short, humorous (sometimes) things and want to explore being a bit more intentional and this challenge video will defo help, so thank you :).
Sorry about my late reply. I had visitors last week and this weekend and have just been really busy, only just getting back to my Substack now.
It was wonderful to get your message, especially since the piece I wrote was a while ago now and my publication has evolved quite a bit since then, including my particular focus and area of interest. I'm just as beguiled and thrilled by the craft of writing, but I have since been more interested in actually using the craft itself to write about real things rather than self-referentially writing about writing, if you see what I mean.
I LOVED this. I appreciate how much depth you packed into a short video. Super helpful. I’ve always wondered how David makes his essays feel meandering and stream of consciousness (even though they clearly have a point and purpose) and this was helpful in showing how he is achieving that.
David Sedaris is one of my favorite writers. Never get tired of listening to his Santaland Diaries.

…i’m not sure where else to put this but writing with Harrison’s constraints will free you to write with whatever other constraints you might need…
